On June 2nd, 1953, HM Queen Elizabeth II, at the age of 27, was crowned regent at Westminster Abbey in London. The coronation ceremony, which carried all the grandeur of the most important royal celebrations, could trace its origin back for several centuries. On such an occasion, all the royal items were displayed in front of the audience. At the climax of the ceremony, the Archbishop of Canterbury would lift St. Edward’s Crown high up in the sky and then put it down on the head of the “indisputable Queen”.

At that time, before British Royal Navy’s warships entered the port of a friendly country, or when they met with ships from friendly countries at open sea, they would fire all their cannons in order to show that they meant no harm. The ships from the other side would do the same in return. Later, this practice has gradually evolved into a ceremony to pay respect to each other.
